Die Casting vs CNC Machining: Which One to Choose

Oct 02, 2026 Vistas: 251 ANXIN CNC Engineer

Compare tooling cost, unit price, geometry and lead time between die casting and CNC machining.

(Content in this language is being translated. Showing English version.)

Both processes produce metal parts - but they suit different volumes, geometries and budgets. Here is a practical comparison.

How the Processes Differ

CNC machining cuts material from solid billet; die casting injects molten aluminum into a steel mold. Machining has no tooling cost; casting has mold cost but very low unit cost at volume.

Volume Break-Even

Below ~500 parts, CNC machining is usually cheaper (no tooling). Above ~1,000 parts, die casting wins with unit prices 50-70% lower. Between 500-1,000, geometry complexity decides.

Geometry and Strength

Machining handles any geometry with uniform strength. Casting excels at thin-wall complex shapes but has porosity risks. Hybrid approach: cast the blank, machine critical faces - our most recommended solution.

How to Decide

Send the same 3D model to both processes and compare quotes. ANXIN offers both, so our advice is neutral and focused on your total cost.
